Reflect, Reset, and Reclaim: Setting Wellness Goals for the New Year

As the year winds down, many of us find ourselves caught between holiday obligations, wrapping up work projects, and planning for the next big thing. But before we jump into “new year, new me” mode, it’s worth pausing to reflect on what the past year has taught us—especially when it comes to health and wellness.

For Black men, the weight of showing up as leaders, providers, and protectors often comes at the expense of your own physical and mental well-being. The barbershop has always been a space for you to feel seen and heard, so take this moment to talk about reclaiming our health as we prepare for the year ahead.

Reflect: What Did This Year Teach You?

Start by asking yourself some honest questions:

  1. How well did I take care of my body this year?

  2. Did I make time for my mental and emotional health?

  3. What are the areas where I struggled or fell short?

There’s no shame in acknowledging the areas where you can improve. Reflection isn’t about judgment; it’s about gaining clarity. Celebrate the wins—whether that’s eating better, going to the gym consistently, or simply taking more time to rest. Then identify what you’d like to build on.

Reset: Let Go of What’s Not Serving You

Sometimes, men engage in habits or routines that can be draining instead of fueling. Whether it’s skipping meals, working long hours without breaks, or neglecting sleep, resetting means letting go of what’s holding you back.

  • Mental Reset: Practice mindfulness. Journaling, meditation, or even daily gratitude can help shift your mindset.

  • Physical Reset: Take inventory of your body. Are you overdue for a doctor’s appointment or a haircut? Your wellness starts with maintenance.

  • Social Reset: Evaluate your circle. Surround yourself with people who uplift and motivate you.

Reclaim: Set Health Goals You Can Actually Keep

The key to reclaiming your wellness is to create realistic, actionable goals. Skip the vague resolutions like “get in shape” and focus on specific steps:

  1. Prioritize Your Health: Commit to scheduling regular checkups for both your physical and mental health. Black men are at higher risk for conditions like hypertension and diabetes, so preventive care is critical.

  2. Get Moving: Start small—whether that’s walking 30 minutes a day, hitting the gym twice a week, or joining a basketball league. Movement is medicine.

  3. Fuel Your Body Right: Don’t overhaul your diet overnight. Begin with small changes, like drinking more water or cutting back on sugar.

Tools for Success

  • Accountability Partners: Share your goals with someone who will keep you motivated.

  • Track Progress: Use a journal or an app to monitor your habits and celebrate milestones.

  • Focus on Consistency: Remember, it’s not about perfection—it’s about persistence.

A Final Thought

Taking care of yourself isn’t selfish; it’s necessary. The stronger and healthier you are, the more you can show up for the people and passions that matter most. As we head into a new year, make it your mission to reclaim your health, your energy, and your peace of mind.
